Child custody: what makes a judge favor one parent over the other?

When parents undergo a divorce, the judge rules that the children of the soon-to-be ex-partners should go with the parent who would prove to uphold the best interests of the children, if time is not split evenly between both parents.  But how can the judge tell if a parent would be able to provide the best possible care for his/her children?

One factor is the set of principles or beliefs that a parent has the possibility of teaching his/her children over the course of the years. The judge would consider each parent’s ideologies, whether each has a stable job, and if either has any prior criminal convictions, among others.
