The Census Bureau recently released a report analyzing data from the American Community Survey covering marriage and divorce trends in 2009.
The report is being called the “first-of-its-kind” for comparing rates across different regions of the U.S. and against other years. In all of the U.S., 19.1 out of every 1,000 men and 17.6 out of every 1,000 women were married in 2009. Also, in 2009, 9.2 out of every 1,000 men and 9.7 out of every 1,000 women finalized a divorce.
The 5 states with the highest divorce rates in 2009 were Oklahoma, Kentucky, Nevada, Alaska, and Maine. The analysis found that both divorce and marriage rates were highest in the South and West and lowest in the Northeast.
