What are the benefits of separation as opposed to immediate divorce?

Legal separation provides a certain measure of space, time, and clarity that traditional divorce does not provide. It gives couples the time and space to determine exactly what they want out of their separation without having to make the final and legally binding decision of ending their marriage. Additionally, legal separation simplifies the divorce process itself if a couple later choose to proceed with divorce. Many of the decisions that must be made in a divorce, such as division of assets and child custody, have already been decided from the legal separation, making divorce a much easier and faster process. There are other reasons why couples may choose to remain married without getting divorced, including religious beliefs and tax benefits.
