National Adoption Month

This month is National Adoption Month.  National Adoption month has been recognized since 1999 and was created to bring attention to the thousands of children going through the foster care system in the United States and thousands more abroad waiting to be adopted.

Part of National Adoption Month is National Adoption Day on Saturday, November 20th.  On this day, courts across the country will focus on finalizing adoptions.  Officials expect 4,500 children in foster care to be legally adopted on this year's National Adoption Day.

There are approximately 463,000 children in the United States waiting to be adopted.  In addition, every year more than 29,000 children in foster care will reach the age of 18 and no longer be eligible for adoption.
